After months of declining or stagnant sales, June has brought a rise in turnover for the DIY sector in Germany. In nominal terms, the retail trade in metal goods, paints and building and DIY supplies recorded a 4.4 per cent increase in turnover compared with June 2025; in real terms, the increase was 3.5 per cent. This is according to preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). So far this year, only March had seen modest growth.
For the second quarter of 2026, the provisional statistics show a decline of 1.4 per cent in nominal terms and 2.4 per cent in real terms. According to Destatis, DIY store turnover for the first half of the year as a whole was 1.1 per cent lower in nominal terms and 2.1 per cent lower in real terms than the corresponding figure for the previous year.
