In 2025, the growth in retail turnover in the European Union slowed further compared with the previous year, standing at 2.1 per cent. These figures were announced by NIQ Geomarketing. The strongest growth was seen in Northern and Eastern European countries, led by Norway at 13.1 per cent, followed by Lithuania (+10.0 per cent), Sweden (+8.9 per cent), Bulgaria (+8.2 per cent) and Slovakia (+8.0 per cent).

In contrast, many major Western European markets continued to show subdued growth. Among the 31 countries analysed, Germany (+1.2 per cent), Belgium (+1.7 per cent), Italy (+1.0 per cent) and Switzerland (+1.0 per cent) recorded only modest growth, whilst retail turnover in the United Kingdom actually fell by 0.6 per cent.
