Bauhaus has replaced Obi as the market leader in the German DIY market. According to estimates by Dähne Verlag, the DIY chain's sales in Germany amounted to around EUR 4.310 bn in 2023. The Obi franchise group generated sales of around EUR 4.191 bn in Germany last year.

However, both companies - like almost all German DIY store operators last year - recorded declines in sales compared to 2022. At Bauhaus, the decline amounted to around 2.0 per cent, at Obi it was 4.8 per cent. Of the eight largest German DIY retailers, only Globus recorded growth. The chain increased by 1.6 per cent. The combined turnover generated by the top 8 German DIY store operators in Germany fell by 2.8 per cent to EUR 22.105 bn. In terms of change rates compared to the previous year, Hornbach was the second-best performer with a decrease of 1.0 per cent. All figures refer to non-like-for-like sales.

In the ranking compiled by the research department of the trade journal diy-Fachmagazin at Dähne Verlag for its annual Baumarkt + Garten Statistik (statistics DIY and garden stores), the ranking in the top group of German DIY retailers has remained unchanged. Bauhaus and Obi are followed by Hornbach, Rewe with its Toom and B 1 sales divisions (-1.9 per cent) and Hagebau's retail business (-3.6 per cent).

All figures relate to sales realised in Germany. If sales abroad are also taken into account, Obi remains the largest German DIY store operator overall.
