Controversies involving companies owned by top billionaire Manuel B. Villar have cast a heavy shadow on his retail businesses, including home goods retailer AllHome. The Villar family has been repeatedly in the spotlight recently over controversies involving his companies, including one pertaining to the surge in the value of empty lands owned by his companies following their transfer to an affiliate. The properties, purchased for 5.2 bn pesos (PHP, EUR 139 mio), were revalued to a whopping PHP 1.33 tn after six months. The revaluation was later written down by 99 per cent after an auditor rejected the inflated value. The family’s water distribution arm PrimeWater is also subject to scrutiny following mounting consumer complaints over service.  The group is also being accused of nonpayment of taxes.
