Hornbach sales fall in Germany and grow abroad

German DIY chain Hornbach reported sales of EUR 1.6676 bn at its stores in Europe in the first quarter of 2023 (1 March to 31 May), down 2.2 per cent on the previous year. The Hornbach Group as a whole also posted a minus of 2.2 per cent to EUR 1.773 bn. According to the company, this was due to the cold and rainy weather across Continental Europe, which impacted sales performance particularly in March and April. On a like-for-like and currency-adjusted basis, sales at the DIY division declined by 3.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2023/24 (2022/23: +5.3 per cent).

In Germany, net sales at Hornbach Baumarkt AG declined by 5.2 per cent to EUR 808.5 mio in the first quarter. Like-for-like sales declined by 5.7 per cent. Sales outside Germany rose by 0.8 per cent to EUR 859.2 mio. The foreign share of sales at the Hornbach Baumarkt AG subgroup rose from 50.0 per cent to 51.5 per cent. Adjusted for sales area and currency items, sales in other European countries fell by 0.8 per cent.

The share of total sales at the Hornbach Baumarkt AG subgroup attributable to online sales (including Click & Collect) amounted to 13.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2023/24 (2022/23: 15.3 per cent) and thus remained above the pre-pandemic level. Compared with the same quarter in the previous year, online sales fell by 18.1 per cent to EUR 221.0 mio.
