According to the report, Leroy Merlin aims to open three DIY stores in Almaty and the surrounding region. Construction of the first store, with a retail area of 16 500 m², is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of 2016 and be completed by the start of 2018. Plans are in hand to build two more stores on the arterial roads to Kapchagay and Ghulja by 2020.
Obi is expected to enter the market through a franchise agreement with the company Asadel DIY. According to Nurlan Abdikarimov, the company's representative in Russia, Obi is considering building six DIY stores in various cities in Kazakhstan. The Forbes business magazine reports that the first outlet is likely to open to customers in Almaty in 2017.
Hitherto the trade in building supplies in Kazakhstan has taken place primarily in bazaars. The country's biggest DIY chain is Stroimart, which reportedly has stores in 23 towns. Other market players are Megastroi with six branches nationwide and TOO with one DIY store and two shops in shopping centres in Almaty.
