Roughly a third of European home improvement jobs are so-called DIFM jobs - do-it-for-me. The proportion varies from one country to another, but has scarcely changed in the last three years, according to the market research company USP. In 2015 it was at its highest in Italy with 40 per cent and at its lowest in France with 26 per cent.
Two fundamental reasons for this situation are the ageing population and the declining willingness and ability of the younger generation to do DIY jobs themselves. This is because the ownership quota in the older generation is mostly higher, while younger people often have no desire to own property ("generation rent"). On the other hand, the younger generation is more inclined to spend more money on a professional than give up their time to do home improvement jobs themselves, according to USP's analysis.
