The market volume of the DIY retail sector was 1.5 per cent down throughout Europe in 2009. Germany was still the biggest market with a volume of € 42.96 bn, followed by France with € 19.00 bn. These figures are revealed by the "European Consumer Barometer 2010" compiled by the Dresdner-Cetelem Kreditbank, which also investigates the markets of Spain, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. However, consideration must be given to the fact that the survey refers to different data sources in the individual countries and that several countries are no longer included in the current study.
Generally speaking the survey records a marked willingness of European consumers to invest in DIY and garden products. The level of buying intention has risen from 19 to 23 per cent on average.
The market researchers also note the development of another trend in the form of increased competition for the static trade from the internet and the second-hand market.
