Scottish garden centres are also allowed to open again

Garden centres in the UK are re-opened now.

Garden centres in the UK are re-opened now.

In Scotland, garden centres are allowed to open again from today, 29 May 2020. This was announced by the Scottish government yesterday. Scotland is therefore one of the last countries in Europe to re-open its garden centres. Garden centres in Wales and England re-opened more than two weeks ago, while garden centres in Northern Ireland were able to re-open last week.

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) Chairman, James Barnes, said: "The delay in re-opening has meant that the Scottish horticulture industry is at a significant disadvantage to the rest of the UK, having lost a crucial trading period at a daily cost of GBP 1 mio."

According to details from the Garden Centre Association, sales in the garden industry in April lay 86 per cent below the comparable previous year's value. The British industry service Garden Forum reported about the GCA Barometer for April. According to this, sales losses of 45 per cent accumulated in the first four months. The worst affected were outdoor plants at -77 per cent.
