The international purchasing cooperative Arena has announced another new member. The Canadian retail group Spancan Corporation joined the Arena Alliance as its twelfth member on 30 June 2025. Just yesterday, Arena announced the accession of Slovenian retailer Merkur on the same date.

Spancan is a purchasing cooperative formed by three members: ILDC, Federated Cooperatives Ltd and Timber Market. These three groups comprise a total of 20 independent retailers with around 1,200 stores across Canada. Their combined turnover amounts to CAD 9.3 billion (EUR 5.7 billion).

Spancan is already the third Canadian trading company in the Arena Alliance after BMR and Kent Building Supplies. Until now, the purchasing cooperative founded in Europe has only accepted one member per country.
