The Italian DIY market grew by 1.4 per cent year-on-year in 2022 to reach a volume of EUR 5.3 bn. Compared with the pre-Covid year of 2019, this equates to growth of 10.5 per cent. This is according to the GDS Report Monitoraggio 2022, published by industry service diyandgarden.com based on GfK figures. In 2021, the market had grown by 9.5 per cent compared with 2020, which had been severely affected by the pandemic.

Among the twelve product groups, the building materials category grew the most, by 15.9 per cent in 2022. Like plumbing and miscellaneous, it accounted for 16 per cent of total sales. The lighting category declined the most, with volumes falling by 17.2 per cent; however, it only accounts for 5 per cent of total sales.

The report's statistics identified a total of 797 outlets, 16 fewer than a year ago. However, the sales area has grown by 0.8 per cent to 1.284 mio m². Average selling space increased by 1.5 per cent to 2 865 m² per store.

The report also briefly discusses the garden centre market. It puts the number of garden centres at 260 and the sales area at 378 900 m².
