German DIY store sales grow by 2.3 percent in the third quarter

After nine months in 2022, DIY and garden centres in Germany show a 10.5 per cent increase in sales, and a 9.8 per cent increase in like-for-like sales, on sales of EUR 17.02 bn. These figures were announced by the BHB. The association emphasises that this increase, however, is also due to the comparison with the same period of the previous year, in which the first four months were affected by total or partial lockdowns.

According to the BHB, the comparison of the third quarters seems to be more meaningful: here, the industry will grow by 2.3 per cent in Germany in 2022, by 1.6 per cent on the same area, to a turnover of EUR 5.50 bn.

Current topics such as energy saving and efficiency are also reflected in the development of the individual product ranges. In the measurably declining sector, however, there are only three assortment areas in Germany with garden furniture (-3.8 per cent), wood (-3.2 per cent) and garden equipment (-0.1 per cent). The high growth rates for automotive (+46.9 percent, includes products such as fuel, fuel storage, lubricants, oils, but also car care products) and heating/sanitary (+34.4 per cent) clearly show that people are stocking up in view of the price development. The renovation product ranges are also showing a double-digit positive development.
