Dutch DIY market 16 per cent below boom year 2020

The Dutch DIY sector recorded a double-digit decline in sales in 2021 compared with the boom year of 2020. According to the Total Store Report by market research company GfK, DIY stores in the Netherlands saw a 16.4 per cent drop in sales compared with the previous year. Total turnover is put at EUR 3.4 bn; in 2020, it was EUR 4.1 bn. However, Mix points out that sales in 2021 were still 3.3 per cent higher than in 2019, the year before the coronavirus crisis.

At -24.0 per cent, the decline in 2021 was greatest in the hardware and tools product group, while it was smallest in building components (doors, windows, etc.) at -6.5 per cent. Garden assortments were 13.4 per cent below the previous year. The other product groups fared as follows: construction chemicals and materials -10.6 per cent, decorative -18.1 per cent, electrical -18.6 per cent, sanitary -15.2 per cent, other -15.6 per cent.
