German DIY retailer Obi's announcement on 7 March 2022 that it would close its stores in Russia in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine has led to tumultuous scenes in the stores. A video posted by Russian business portal dp.ru Business News shows checkout scenes from an Obi store in St. Petersburg. The video was apparently recorded on Tuesday, 8 March 2022, which is also the date referred to in the accompanying text, which reads under the headline " Huge queues at Obi shops in St Petersburg before closure": "Huge queues have formed in the Obi chain shops in Saint Petersburg following the news of the company's closure in Russia.” Video footage of the consumer rush in one of the supermarkets has been published by 78.ru. The footage shows that the sales area is packed to the brim with customers.
