The US home improvement store operator Home Depot has been offering workshops for kids in local stores since 1997. The coronavirus pandemic has put a stop to this activity for now, however. Although currently unable to offer the courses, Home Depot is helping children to continue working on the projects at home. In the last four months, the company has donated more than 500 000 Kids Workshop kits to over 100 charitable organisations and schools across the country. Various American organisations, including the Boys & Girls Club of America, ToolBank and the YMCA have received these packages. The retailer will continue to donate kits until the local workshops can take place again.
To be able to inspire young creators further without them having to step outside their homes, Home Depot has also worked with influencers. These Internet celebrities present projects online each month that boys and girls can work on, adding tips on virtual assembly. As well as being donated to not-for-profit organisations, the Kids Workshop kits can also be picked up from stores free of charge on the first Saturday of every month.
To share the knowledge with adults, Home Depot has launched live-streaming workshops led by employees with specialist skills. The first series, "Homeowner 101" aims to equip new home owners with the tools and knowledge they need to tackle various projects and repairs. The series of training workshops includes live-streaming courses on basic topics, such as "Systems", "Indoor" and "Outdoor". Virtual courses on core DIY topics such as drywall construction repairs, painting and laying tiles will be added in the autumn.
Additional on-demand instruction videos for children and adults are available on Home Depot's YouTube channel. The videos cover a host of subjects, ranging from "How to plant flowers" to "How to unblock a toilet".
