DIY stores in France recorded a further decline in turnover in 2025. Their turnover of EUR 21.823 bn was 1.4 per cent below the previous year’s level, but remains above pre-pandemic levels. This marks the third consecutive year of decline. Without online sales, the decline would have been even steeper. In e-commerce, DIY stores achieved a 7.7 per cent increase compared with the previous year, whilst their high-street business fell by 1.9 per cent. E-commerce thus accounted for 6.2 per cent of total turnover. These figures were published by the French industry associations FMB (retail) and Inoha (manufacturers).

Only two product categories recorded growth in 2025. The heating and air conditioning category grew by 3.3 per cent. This was driven in particular by air conditioning units and fans, which saw an increase of 18 per cent. The electrical goods category also grew, rising by 0.6 per cent.

Despite slight declines, the associations consider some product categories to be resilient. The sanitaryware and kitchen range, which accounts for 15 per cent of total turnover, fell by 1.5 per cent compared with 2024, but remains 15 per cent above the 2019 figure. Wood has grown by 11 per cent compared with 2019, despite a recent decline of 2.4 per cent. With a fall of 0.2 per cent, the garden range has remained virtually at the previous year’s level.

When comparing store formats, big-box stores with more than 10,000 m² performed best. The study by FMB and Inoha attributes turnover of 11.764 billion euros to them; this was 0.3 per cent below the previous year’s figure. Local convenience stores with less than 4,000 m² of retail floor space recorded a 2.1 per cent decline in turnover compared with the previous year. The warehouse format, which falls between the two, saw the sharpest decline, down 3.3 per cent; it is attributed a turnover of EUR 3.888 bn. The total retail floor space of all DIY store outlets in France rose by 1.0 per cent to 8.040 million m².

Among the DIY retail groups operating in France (see chart), there is a clear winner: Groupe Adeo has grown by 1.0 per cent to EUR 11.117 bn. The British Kingfisher Group (EUR 5.397 bn), by contrast, has recorded declines.

The DIY crowd

Overall, DIY remains widespread in France. These are the findings of a survey carried out by the French DIY trade association FMB in collaboration with Viavoice. According to the survey, 89 per cent of French people say they do DIY, with 39 per cent doing so regularly.
