Mr. DIY, Malaysia's biggest home improvement store chain with 594 branches nationwide, has been allowed to partially reopen in nine of the country's 13 states. As of 9 April,147 stores in Johor, Kedah, Malacca, Perlis, Sarawak, Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, and Terrengganu have been permitted to operate twice weekly, following an announcement a day before that 20 outlets in Negeri Sembilan and 40 locations in Perak have been reopened under similar arrangements. The days the branches are open depend on their locations. Store hours could run from six to eight hours.
Mr. DIY was allowed to partially open selected stores amid a prevailing movement control order, which bars non-essential business establishments from operating and requires people to stay at home.
Of the 207 stores that are now operating, 88 are in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, the capital. All Mr. DIY branches had been closed from March 18, when the lockdown was imposed.
Malaysia has recorded 4,119 Covid-19 infections, with 65 deaths as of 8 April.
