German DIY stores growing again

Sales in the sector increased by 1.2 per cent in the first six months

Gross sales by DIY retailers in Germany in the first half of 2015 amounted to € 9.30 bn, equivalent to growth of 1.2 per cent compared with the previous year. The positive figure is chiefly attributable to the second quarter, according to the German DIY retail association BHB.
The highest absolute sales were recorded by German DIY stores in the segments of building chemistry/building materials (€ 863.0 mio), plumbing/heating products (€ 777.9 mio), garden fixtures and fittings (€ 712.8 mio), coatings/painting accessories (€ 642.1 mio) and electrical supplies (€ 594.1 mio). The garden ranges proved the growth driver here; with total gross sales of € 2.48 bn the ranges – garden chemicals/soil/seeds (€ 400.1 mio), plants and shrubs (€ 564.4 mio), garden fixtures and fittings (€ 712.8 mio), garden appliances/watering and drainage (€ 567.2 mio) and garden furniture (€ 237.9 mio) – accounted for around 27 per cent of the total sales by DIY stores.
