Metro Cash & Carry considers pulling out of Denmark

The German trading group regrets the lack of growth prospects

After carefully weighing up all conceivable options, the Metro Group is considering pulling its wholesale business out of Denmark. The Düsseldorf-based retail organisation’s reason for contemplating this move is that the Danish market is regarded as saturated, thereby offering insufficient growth prospects. With just five stores, however, Metro Cash & Carry doesn’t have a critical mass in the country.
Metro Cash & Carry Denmark operates five wholesale outlets in all, in Aalborg, Aarhus, Glostrup, Kolding and Copenhagen. It currently employs around 700 staff.
