Kingfisher off to a positive start

The British retailer’s sales were up 6.1 per cent in the first quarter

Kingfisher started fiscal 2014/2015 with an increase of 6.1 per cent in sales in the first quarter (ended 3 May 2014). Its retail profit rose by 20.3 per cent to GBP 142 mio.
In the UK and Ireland, sales were up 12.4 per cent to GBP 1.200 bn, with a like-for-like increase of 10.1 per cent. The B&Q distribution channel increased sales by 10.5 per cent to GBP 1.008 bn, while Screwfix sales increased by 24.2 per cent to GBP 192 mio.
In France, sales by the British retail group came to GBP 1.077 bn, 0.2 per cent down on the same period in the previous year. At a constant exchange rate this figure was equal to a 3.3 per cent increase and a like-for-like increase of 1.6 per cent.
Of Kingfisher’s other foreign markets, two in particular contributed to growth. The sales of the Polish stores were up 12.9 per cent over the same period in the previous year to GBP 260 mio (like-for-like: up 7.2 per cent). Sales in Russia grew by 14.5 per cent to GBP 82 mio (like-for-like sales up 11.0 per cent), although the retail loss here was GBP three million. Sales by the Koçtaş stores in Turkey rose by 12.1 per cent and like-for-like sales by 2.4 per cent following one new opening. Although sales were up by 22.4 per cent in Spain, this was attributable to three new openings; like-for-like sales were down by 3.7 per cent. China sales were down by 5.0 per cent to GBP 68 mio (like-for-like down 4.4 per cent). The Bricostore outlets acquired in Romania in the previous year contributed sales of GBP 16 mio.
