Russian garden market continues to grow

31.05.2013
The DIY trade is taking the biggest share of the green market, but a lack of development sites poses the biggest problem

The market volume of the Russian garden supplies trade is currently estimated at US $ 3 to 4.3 bn. A forecast by the Discovery Research Group indicates that the market, including garden equipment, will grow to US $ 4.8 bn in 2013. Around 55 per cent of this trade is accounted for by DIY stores, followed by garden centres and garden supermarkets. The products in greatest demand are seeds and plants, gardening and watering products, garden equipment, fertilisers and plant protection products. The reasons for this trend include the fact that an increasing number of Russians want to spend their holiday in their own country and the interest in decor and garden design is growing. One obstacle to trade, however, is a lack of suitable sites for building DIY stores and garden centres, and commercial rents are high.
