Modest improvement for German DIY sector

Sales in DIY stores grew by two per cent in the first six months

According to information from the retailers’ association BHB, sales in DIY stores in Germany increased by 2.0 per cent in the first six months of 2011 to €9.49 bn (unadjusted compared with the previous year). Sales on a comparable retail area rose by 1.4 per cent.
The first quarter experienced a growth rate of 3.3 per cent compared with the same period in the previous year. For the second quarter, the association and the market research company GfK reported an increase of 1.1 per cent. Nearly all ranges were impacted by the fall, but as expected, the segment hit hardest was the garden segment.
