DIY in trouble

The 2009 crisis has made its mark on Russian DIY retailing

The Russian DIY sector is suffering from the 2009 crisis. Not only the drop in purchasing power but also price increases for imported building materials, household and garden products, plus rising interest rates and delays in the housing construction industry have caused it a lot of trouble.
As a result, the number of trading companies selling DIY products has gone down by at least ten per cent. At the beginning of 2010 RosBusinessConsulting, a Russian management consultancy, counted around 500 such multiple chains still. The network of branches also felt the effects: while the full-line DIY retailers saw their total number of stores reduced by three to five per cent, the specialized traders have 11 - 13 per cent more outlets.
