The view of most who attended the Totally DIY exhibition this week at Birmingham's NEC was that the event was a big success and a lot better than last year's show, which was the last one to take place in London.
This year's show, which ran alongside Totally Tools and Totally Secure, broke new ground not only for the move away from the capital to Birmingham, but also because it was run as part of the much larger Spring Fair International, which was also taking place at the same venue and at the same time.
Many exhibitors who were showing decorative products reported that they benefited from Spring Fair visitors also calling in at their stands. Other factors leading to an increased footfall at the Show were that the venue was more user-friendly and convenient for visitors than a central London venue and also there is some increased optimism in the UK market at present.
This was also the theme of the Conference which ran as part of the Show. Stephen Robertson, director general of the British Retail Consortium, pointed out that overall the retail sector had proven fairly resilient and the DIY sector specifically is now showing some increase again.
Speaking about the Show as a whole, James Murray, Brintex exhibition director, said: "Feedback from our exhibitors, old and new, has been totally positive for this year's show. Our exhibitors have benefited from increased footfall and some great crossover sales from visitors to the Spring Fair."
In addition to UK buyers, the Show also had an international flavour with exhibitors reporting visitors from Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Dubai, Scandinavia and other countries.
Next year's Totally DIY will take place on 6, 7 and 8 February 2011 at the Birmingham NEC.
