Currently Michael Arnold, Praktiker’s director of internationalisation, rates the situation of the three Praktiker stores in Ukraine as “extremely critical”. As he said at a press conference during the official opening of the first Praktiker DIY store in Tirana, the capital of Albania, “We shall be looking very closely at developments over the coming year. Rather a painful break than long drawn-out agony.” The deterioration of the currency and downward private consumption are leading to the poor results shown by the stores. Another reason for a possible withdrawal could be the uncertain political situation in the country. Arnold also views the situation in Hungary with some scepticism.
