The use of self-checkout systems will almost treble by 2012 to around 250 000 installed systems worldwide. That is the conclusion reached by the London Retail Banking Research Institute (RBR) in its recently published report, “Global EPOS and Self-Checkout 2009”. This information comes from NCR, a company that regards itself as the global market leader in the field of self-checkout technology. Moreover, the survey reveals that the introduction of self-checkout systems, where customers themselves carry out the scanning, packing and payment processes at the end of their visit, has accelerated within the past two years.
