Total sales at retail generated by the German Rewe Group rose by 10.5 per cent in 2008 to € 49.8 bn. The group’s specialist stores and cooperative businesses achieved a sales increase of 22.2 per cent to € 2.8 bn. In the words of a press release, Toom Baumarkt moved “in a difficult market environment characterised by the effects of the sluggish way private consumption is developing”. It also says that the group’s 325 DIY stores in Germany achieved net sales of around € 1.8 bn in 2008. According to the annual report, the company’s 331 stores recorded gross sales of € 1.5 bn in 2007.
