The Canadian daily newspaper Globe & Mail reports that Canadian Tire has its sights set on expansion into grocery retailing. The trading company intends to trial the sale of groceries in two stores in Ontario in November, with the addition of products such as bread, milk and frozen pizzas to its range. The report also says that Canadian Tire is moving into an area where margins are low and the competitive pressure emanating from major discounter Wal-Mart is high. However, groceries brought customers into stores more often, and especially women customers, who then bought other products as well.
