It is becoming increasingly difficult for Sears Holdings, the former retail giant, to hold its own in the intensely competitive American marketplace. Earlier recipes for success have lost their effectiveness and sales have been constantly on the decline for years. The group has announced sales figures for the nine weeks to the end of July: same-store sales were 4 per cent down at Sears and 3.9 per cent down at Kmart.
