Home Depot tests megastores and neighbourhood outlets

According to ajc.com, Home Depot wants to gain additional market share with two new formats: megastores and neighbourhood outlets. The first megastore is being set up in Union, New Jersey, on the site of a former Expo Design store. The opening is planned for April/May 2008. It is double the size of a traditional Home Depot, and will boast a retail area of approx. 21 000 m². Elements taken both from the Expo concept and from the regular DIY stores are to be combined under the one roof.
Being developed in parallel for smaller catchment areas and holiday centres are outlets with a retail area of 3 300 to 4 700 m². These first neighbourhood stores are to be opened in the San Francisco Bay region, where Home Depot acquired a small chain known as Yardbirds in 2005, according to ajc.com.
