Sharper rise in retail space than sales

12.03.2007

The floorspace of all the DIY stores in Germany was down in 2006, though numbers were up

The 20 largest German DIY retailers increased their domestic sales by 1.5 per cent to € 19.7 bn in 2006. In like-for-like terms, however, they recorded a loss of 0.7 per cent. As ascertained by Dähne Verlag, their retail area saw a rise of 2.2 per cent to 13.2 mio m², which indicates stronger growth here.
On the other hand, the retail area of all the DIY and building stores in Germany combined was down by 92 000 m² to 17.574 mio m². The publishers estimate their overall sales at approx. € 27.6 bn, a figure that was exactly the same in 2005. Taken as the basis for this estimate is the average space productivity of the Top 20 at € 1 572 per m². At the end of 2006 there were 4 256 DIY stores over 400 m² in size in Germany altogether, or 37 more than the previous year.
