Sluggish DIY business

Homebase sales were 3 per cent down in like-for-like terms in the first half of the company's financial year

Homebase grew sales by 1 per cent in the first six months of the group's financial year (to 31 August 2006), 4 per cent of which was generated by new openings. Seven outlets were opened in the period under consideration, resulting in an increase in the number of stores to 304, 156 of them with a mezzanine floor. Like-for-like sales for the period under consideration were 3 per cent down on the same period last year. While furniture and kitchens achieved strong sales growth, the DIY and decorating ranges continued sluggish, according to the company.
Homebase is part of the Argos Retail Group, which has now been renamed the Home Retail Group. This is part of the strategy of the parent company, GUS, to stress the retailer's claim to leadership in the field of home and garden. Nothing about the names of the two trading formats, Homebase and Argos, is to be changed.
