Marktkauf (Germany) wants to part from its DIY retail division, but according to a press release, the approximately 150 DIY stores are not saleable as the market stands at present. First they will have to be reorganised. The management is currently working out a concept to this effect. Since the beginning of the year 300 jobs have already been axed in the DIY retail division (with around 6 000 employees altogether). The reorganisation policy envisages cutting around 1 000 more jobs in the company overall, 400 of them in the area of administration and logistics alone.
Last year the company chalked up sales of just under € 5.6 bn and losses of € 17.7 mio; the latter figure is expected to have already reached as much as € 50 mio in the first months of this year. In the first six months of 2006 the sales of the DIY stores went down to € 433 mio (comparable period last year: € 465.5 mio).
