The European competition authority gave its approval to the merger of Sonae Indústria and Hornitex on 28 June 2006. This means the contract of sale that Sonae Indústria concluded last spring with Hornitex has now come into force with effect from 1 July. The Hornitex Group with its works in Horn-Bad Meinberg, Beeskow and Duisburg, all in Germany, now officially belongs to the Sonae Indústria group of companies, a supplier of derived timber products with headquarters in Maia, Portugal. The acquisition of the Hornitex Group was effected through Glunz AG, the German subsidiary of Sonae Indústria. The Hornitex works will trade under the name of GHP GmbH until further notice under the umbrella of Glunz AG.
The Portuguese Sonae Indústria Group is one of the world's largest manufacturers of derived timber products, with 35 production facilities in nine countries. Sonae Indústria generated sales of almost € 1.5 bn with around 5 400 employees in the 2005 financial year.
