The German DIY trade notched up sales losses of 2.7 per cent in the first three months of the year

The German DIY stores started the year 2006 by recording losses. The trade notched up sales of € 3.75 bn in the first quarter, or 2.7 per cent less than the same period last year. According to the BHB, it has fallen 5.1 per cent behind the figures for the first three months of 2005 in like-for-like terms. The deficit was specially large in the garden departments because of the delayed beginning of spring. In March alone a loss of 17 per cent made itself felt here.
Winners in the first-quarter sales stakes were above all the fringe ranges of housewares, pet products, motor accessories and bicycles, which recorded an increase of 5.3 per cent. Of the traditional DIY categories, only building materials and chemicals, plumbing, tools and machinery plus electricals achieved any "noteworthy increase", it appears. Heating equipment and accessories saw growth of more than 40 per cent, which led to a 3.1 per cent unadjusted rate of increase for the sanitary area as a whole.
