Just below expectations

Sales in 2005 failed to come up to expectations at Zeus, but growth is on the cards for 2006

Zeus achieved centrally-invoiced sales of € 1.51 bn in 2005, which amounts to 3.26 per cent less than the previous year's result. The expectation was for "consistency with the previous year at best", according to a press announcement from the company. The retail sales of the stores operated by Zeus were also down, this time by 2.8 per cent to € 2.13 bn.
In explanation of these figures, Michael Baumgardt, managing director for Zeus systems, names three factors: long periods of bad weather in the first quarter of 2005, the high comparative level of sales set by the strong quarter in the previous year, and the fact that the overall total of Hagebaumarkt stores remained below the comparable figure from the previous year for every month except December. Nevertheless, the company did succeed in increasing bonuses by 1.6 per cent as well as keeping margins constant. Management at Zeus is counting on slight sales growth in 2006 resulting from new retail space, outlets and renovations, and from the launch of the new "Werkmarkt" system.
