The founder of tool dealers Lux and co-founder of Obi passed away last Sunday
Dr Emil Lux, one of the most prominent figures in the German and European DIY industry, died on 18 December at the age of 87.
Following the Second World War, Emil Lux entered the company formed by his father in 1918. In 1954 he introduced a new concept into the company, the Do-it-yourself system, which was to point the way for an entire industry. In 1970 Emil Lux and Manfred Maus together established the first Obi DIY and home improvement store in Hamburg, thus starting the history of the most successful DIY franchise system in Germany. Today Emil Lux GmbH & Co. KG employs over 820 people from 35 nations and has sales of over € 200 mio a year.
