DIY stores worse than the rest

AVA has submitted its latest quarterly figures; the DIY stores recorded below-average growth

In the third quarter of 2005 AVA, the Bielefeld-based retailer, increased group sales by 1.5 per cent to € 1.26 bn (last year: € 1.24 bn), thereby exceeding the first half year's growth rate of 0.8 per cent. This translates into an increase of 1.2 per cent in group sales to € 4.12 bn (last year: € 4.07 bn) for the first nine months of 2005.
Helmut Metje, chairman of the Edeka subsidiary AVA, said in Bielefeld that this positive development is being fuelled mainly by the hypermarkets and superstores belonging to the AVA sales company Marktkauf (with a plus of 1.2 per cent in the first three quarters clearly better than the sector as a whole), whereas the DIY store division has suffered from the miserable gardening and camping season (plus 0.5 per cent). Metje expects growth of around one per cent for AVA in 2005. Pre-tax results may well remain below the previous year's figure of € 57.8 mio, but above forecast.
