The Metro group and GS1 Germany have been awarded the contract to operate an EPCglobal-accredited Test Lab for the continuing development of RFID technology. EPCglobal is the international RFID standardisation organisation based in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). In addition to the Metro and GS1 Test Lab it has accredited three further test centres, one in Taiwan and two in the US. Preparations are to be made in particular for the application of RFID on two levels, both outers and individual items, and in the complex environment of a variety of materials such as metals and fluids. As the only institution of this type in Europe, the Test Lab will be set up on the premises of the Metro group's RFID Innovation Center in Neuss. The setting-up period should be completed by the end of October 2005.
