Retail sales are up

The volume of sales in the euro-zone saw growth of 1.4 per cent in March over last year

First estimates from Eurostat suggest that the volume of retail sales in March 2005 experienced growth of 1.4 per cent in the euro-zone over the same period last year and 2.1 per cent in the EU25. When compared with February 2005, the retail index in both the euro-zone and the EU25 increased by 0.3 per cent. Sales in the non-food sector grew by 1.3 per cent in the euro-zone and by 2.0 per cent in the EU25.
A rise in overall retail sales was recorded for Denmark (+8.2 per cent), Slovakia (+8.1 per cent), Sweden (+8.0 per cent), Portugal (+4.3 per cent), the United Kingdom (+3.8 per cent), Lithuania (+3.5 per cent), Belgium (+2.7 per cent), Luxembourg (+2.6 per cent), Spain (+1.8 per cent), France (+1.5 per cent) and Germany (+0.6 per cent). Only in Poland was a downswing of -5.7 per cent in evidence.
