German sector increases sales by just over one per cent, but figures down markedly for garden segment

German DIY stores with a retail area in excess of 1 000 m2 achieved sales of € 17.482 bn in 2004, equivalent to an increase of 1.3 per cent over 2003. Like-for-like sales equalled the level of the previous year. The figures were published by the BHB. The overall retail area of the DIY stores studied increased more sharply by 2.8 per cent to 15.67 mio m2.
Regarding the trend for individual product groups, the association found that the desire of consumers to make economies meant that it was the “classic” DIY items that were in demand. Thus sales of paints and varnishes were up by 4.7 per cent, timber/plastics by 4.5 per cent and hardware/security by 2.7 per cent. The garden segment fared less well in a rainy summer; here sales of plants/seeds declined by 3.4 per cent, while garden hardware was down 2.5 per cent and garden furniture and decoration down 4.2 per cent on the previous year.
