Today Praktiker is introducing the first self-checkout in the European DIY retail sector at its store in Saarbrücken. The aim is to make the payment process more effective and reduce the waiting times at the checkout. In future, customers will be able to choose between the traditional method of paying at a conventional checkout operated by a store employee or hastening the process at a so-called SCO (self checkout) when buying only a few products and at peak times. Praktiker is testing this new technology within the framework of the Metro group’s Future Store Initiative. Further Praktiker stores are due to follow at Trier and Hildesheim in 2005.
