Home Depot’s first neighbourhood-concept store opened in Brooklyn.
With this new concept the world’s biggest DIY retail group is going on the offensive on city-centre sites. The store format has been very much reduced compared with the group’s warehouse-style outlets in order to meet the demands of the locations. In area the new pilot store covers about two thirds of that of a traditional Home Depot. The total retail area of 5 700 m2 extends over an L-shaped floor plan. A mezzanine floor of around 300 m2 was installed so that better use could be made of the space available. Accommodated on this additional floor is a display called “Design Place” where kitchens are presented along with sketches of bathrooms, everything to do with windows, and floor coverings. These products are available through an order service on the same or following day.
The “Design Place” was installed on a mezzanine floor, where it houses kitchens and kitchen equipment among other things.
Even though the new store boasts all the traditional Home Depot departments, the number of products has been reduced by 30 per cent. This means that the choice within certain product categories has been slimmed down: whereas the customary Home Depot stocks 10 to 15 articles, the convenience concept choice is limited to three or four.

The new Home Depot does not have an outdoor garden centre: plants are available within the store. The area of cleaning equipment and cleaning products has been upgraded on the other hand. Home Depot intends to outstrip the modest range offered by drugstores and small food shops in this category. The selection has also been expanded where standard and table lamps are concerned, and interior paints as well. The neighbourhood-  concept store is to be put into practice on other locations in the future. The opening of one store on Staten Island, New York, is planned for September, with another scheduled for Chicago in January 2003. The neighbourhood stores of the future will have a floorspace of between 4 600 and 7 500 m2.
The cleaning section has been considerably upgraded.
