Leroy Merlin the most sustainable

Leroy Merlin has been highlighting the subject of sustainability for quite some time now. The year 2011 saw the opening in Valence of the chain’s first “positive energy” store, an outlet producing more energy than it consumes.

Consumers in three countries regard the French chain as the tops

The Leroy Merlin DIY chain, operated by the French Groupe Adeo, is perceived by customers to be the leading retailer in terms of its range of sustainable products. In the European Home Improvement Monitor compiled by the USP Marketing Consultancy, only Kingfisher achieves a comparably high rating: of 30 per cent for B&Q in Britain and 24 per cent for Castorama in Poland. By contrast Leroy Merlin heads the field in three countries: with 25 per cent in France, 33 per cent in Italy and 48 per cent in Spain. The German DIY chain Bauhaus is also the leader in three markets: Germany and Austria/Switzerland (which the survey considers together) with 14 per cent each and Scandinavia with 12 per cent. A striking fact here is that a consistently high proportion of consumers does not consider any DIY retailer to have great expertise in matters of sustainability. However, when evaluating the results it must be taken into account that the survey was carried out on a relatively narrow basis of 3 000 respondents in 13 countries.
