The third quarter brought the number one a 20 per cent increase in profit

Home Depot again lags behind its considerably smaller competitor, Lowe's, in terms of sales and profit in the third quarter of 2005. By comparison with the previous year, Home Depot succeeded in increasing its profit in this period by 20 per cent to US $ 1.5 bn (€ 1.3 bn), and for the first nine months the company has disclosed profit growth of 15 per cent to US $ 4.6 bn (€ 3.9 bn).
Sales in the third quarter were up by 10.5 per cent to US $ 20.7 bn (€ 17.7 bn), or 3.6 per cent like-for-like. Growth in the first nine months came to 10.2 per cent, amounting to US $ 62.0 bn (€ 52.9 bn). A particularly good result was recorded by the installation business, which saw growth of 21 per cent to US $ 1.2 bn (€ 1.0 bn). At the end of the third quarter, Home Depot numbered 1 972 locations following 37 new openings and the closure of 20 Expo stores. The combined retail area rose by 7.2 per cent to 19.3 mio m².
