Expansion into Mexico instead of Asia or Europe

According to a report from a banking analyst, Lowe’s might well go international within the next few years. However, there is still potential for growth in the USA

It is possible that Lowe’s, the American home improvement chain, which has so far been active only in the home market in the USA, is contemplating expansion into Mexico. This emerges from an assessment made by Deutsche Bank Securities. In his report an analyst refers to discussions with the management, including CEO Robert Niblock. The report states that the first step over the border could come about in three to five years’ time. Expansion into Asia or Europe – and specific mention of Kingfisher is made here – is rated as not very probable.
So far as the company’s development in the USA is concerned, the analyst expects two-figure rates of growth in retail space until 2008. In the long term Lowe’s could operate 1 900 outlets. Along with the 310 new openings envisaged by 2006, the DIY retail chain has also located about 800 further potential sites. The report sees a backlog of demand in the big metropolitan areas in particular. The company operates fewer than 30 per cent of its DIY stores in the 25 biggest areas of this kind. It is quite possible that 50 new stores might be added in the north-east alone during this year and next.
