The two Spanish Adeo subsidiaries Leroy Merlin and Akí are to merge. The merger process should commence this year and be completed by 2020, according to Leroy Merlin España. The Spanish information service Ferretería y Bricolage reports that the merger will also include Portugal, although it is not clear yet which brand the two chains, which have hitherto operated separately, will trade under in the future. Apart from a uniform corporate structure, the official press release only reveals that the two separate brands will henceforth form a multi-format brand, which will comprise small-format local stores as well as large outlets. Work is underway on a brand platform that takes account of the special features of the different formats. Digital transformation will also be advanced by a uniform omnichannel consumer experience.
According to the company, the first step in the integration process will be three pilot projects undertaken by Akí between March and September 2018. The two companies will then merge in 2019 and embark on converting the stores to the new formats.
