Covid-19 has made a significant dent of nearly 50 per cent in the sales of DIY stores in France. The figures in March were 49.48 per cent below the level of the previous year. And the year had started well for the French DIY sector, with sales up by 3.22 per cent in January and 8.50 per cent in February according to monthly figures released by the industry association FMB.
"These figures demonstrate the awareness shown by the DIY companies of their responsibilities since the start of the lockdown," says FMB president Mathieu Pivain. Business has taken a back seat and they have concentrated solely on the basic requirements of the customers under the safety conditions set.
Home improvement stores in France are closed, although they had the right to open. This is because many employees were concerned about becoming infected. The stores responded to the situation by organising the dispatch and sale of products at drive-ins and using the click & collect process. As in supermarket chains, employees who work in the stores can receive a bonus of 1 000 euros.
