Gardening helps many people maintain their mental well-being in their hectic everyday lives. This is what gardening equipment manufacturer Stiga has concluded from the ‘Gardens of Europe’ survey that Yougov conducted on its behalf. Six out of ten Germans surveyed (63 per cent) say that gardening has a positive effect on their mental health. People in the United Kingdom (73 percent), Spain (70 percent), Italy (69 percent) and Poland (67 percent) are even more convinced of this psychological benefit. Germans (76 percent) and Britons (78 percent) in particular ascribe this effect to spending time outdoors.

Europeans – especially Germans and Britons again (61 percent each) – see contact with nature as one of the main benefits of gardening. For a significant proportion of Germans surveyed (42 percent), the opportunity to reduce stress and improve their mood is also an important positive effect of gardening. Thirty percent associate gardening with a feeling of self-fulfilment.

More harmony and activity in green spaces  

According to the survey, the majority of Europeans consider garden areas to be a place of well-being. 73 percent of respondents – led by Poles (80 percent) and Italians (79 percent), followed by Germans (72 percent) – state that they enjoy caring for garden areas.

In addition, gardening motivates many people to adopt an active lifestyle: 41 percent of Germans surveyed state that caring for a garden area encourages them to exercise more regularly.

About the survey  

The polling institute Yougov Italy carried out the survey from 21 to 25 March 2025 among 5,054 people, representative of the gender, age and geographical distribution of the population aged 18 and over in Italy (1,009 respondents), Spain (1,010), Germany (1,012), Poland (1,010) and the United Kingdom (1,013).
