This year's Gardena garden award went to the US company Bird Buddy. The award ceremony took place on Sunday 19 June 2022 at Spoga+Gafa in Cologne. It has created the world's first intelligent bird feeder with AI-based species recognition, live stream and photos, all combined in one app.

"Bird Buddy brings life in the garden wherever users are, contributing to more knowledge about biodiversity," the jury judged. "It is a really smart product with a modular design of hardware and software. They also show us how communities can be built in a fun way. They really put a smile on the faces of the jury members."

The jury had to decide among four finalists of the competition. As partners of the competition, the Spoga+Gafa trade fair, the German DIY trade association BHB, the German trade magazine “Fachmagazin diy” and the "Schöner Wohnen" magazine were again involved. In addition, the German gardening manufacturers’ association IVG is represented on the jury of experts.

The prize is endowed with a total of EUR 10 000 as well as non-cash prizes.

The special prize for innovative logistics solutions, donated by Spoga-+Gafa, goes to the start-up "The Plant Box", with whose service balcony plants can be ordered as easily as pizza.

In addition to the winners, the following founding teams were nominated for the final round (in alphabetical order):

Hive: the system offers honeybees a better, species-appropriate home in which the natural behaviour of the Apis Mellifera is supported.

Respira: the company's mission is to improve indoor health by connecting with nature through urban gardening and improved indoor air quality.
